Grey Rock Golf Club - http://www.thegolfclubatcirclec.com Grey Rock (Formerly Circle C) has undergone a transformation from public to semi private in recent years. The location, in far southwest Austin, is a beautiful example of Texas ranch country. There is a gentle slope on the course, and lots of oaks (and cactus in the rough.) Grey Rock offers individual membership (spring/09) $6300 initiation plus $250 monthly as wel as family, junior, and corporate memberships. The housing in the area began development in the 1990s, with new home construction continuing today. Home prices (spring/09) range from $275K to the mid $400s.

Avery Ranch - http://www.averyranchgolf.com Avery Ranch is a growth hot-spot in northwest Austin near Round Rock and Cedar Park. The Jack Nicklaus designed course is Texas Hill Country style. Membership (spring/09) requires a $3000 initiation fee. Golf and club priviledges are $214/mo for single or $247/mo family. Unlimited range is $19/mo. Crystal Falls Golf Course - http://www.crystalfallsgolf.com Crystal Falls is located in the scenic hill country, just northwest of Austin. The course plays short, but is challenging. Membership to the club is very affordable, considering the upscale housing in the surrounding development. (spring/09) Annual full membership is $1200, family $2000, weekday $900, and weekday family $1200. Residents in the area often enjoy prectacular views, and home prices range (spring/09) from the $300s to $600s. Legacy Hills Golf Club, White Wing Golf Club - Designed by Billy Casper, these two courses are located within Del Webb's Sun City development, just west of Georgetown, Texas - about 25 miles north of Austin. This community is geared toward seniors, but the White Wing course in particular, will challenge the most experienced golfer. Located in the hill country, many views of countryside, flora, and fauna may be pleasently distracting. Although the courses are available for public play, membership for residents cost (spring/09) $1000 annual homeowner dues, and a variety of golf prices from $39 daily (no cart) to annual $2824 single or $4439 family. Georgetown Country Club - http://www.georgetowncountryclub.net Built in 1927, Georgetown Country Club is located on the Middle San Gabriel River, right in the middle of Georgetown, Texas - about a 15 minute drive from Austin. Memberships (spring/09) are very affordable, with a $500 initiation fee, $195 monthly dues, and $75 per quarter meal requirement. Homes in the area range (spring/09) from $135,000 to the mid $700s. Teravista Golf Club - http://www.teravistagolf.com Teravista, a Troon Golf Club, is located in Round Rock, Texas, a fast-growing city ajoining Austin to the north. Teravista is a master-planned community. Although public, the course offers a wide variety of specials and annual memberships, including (spring/09) Resident single $3400, plus one family member $4050, Non Resident single $3900, and plus one family member $4550, senior single $2750 and plus one family member $3400. Lago Vista Golf Club/Lago Vista Course - The Lago Vista Golf Club is located on the north shore of Lake Travis, about 45 minutes from Austin. Although historically, the area has been slow growing and the courses underplayed, this area has enjoyed an influx of retirees and travelers and quite a bit of high end home construction over the past several years. Offering fantastic lake and hill country views, this course and area could become a well traveled resort someday. Although public, memberships are available (spring/09) for $2115 single and $3150 family. Homes in Lago Vista range (spring/09) from the low $100s to $1.75 million.

Highland Lakes Golf Club -  The Highland Lakes Golf Club is located on the north shore of Lake Travis, about 45 minutes from Austin. Although historically, the area has been slow growing and the courses underplayed, this area has enjoyed an influx of retirees and travelers and quite a bit of high end home construction over the past several years. Offering fantastic lake and hill country views, this course and area could become a well traveled resort someday. Forest Creek Golf Club - http://www.forestcreek.com/golf/proto/forestcreek/ Forest Creek was called the best public course in central Texas by Golf Digest Magazine. Opened in 1990, the course is located in Round Rock, just on the north side of Austin, deep inside a community of homes which is well established. A public course, Forest Creek has some very exciting holes, and offers annual memberships (spring/09) single $1600 and family $3000, both plus cart, and a weekday at $825 plus cart. The Golf Club at Star Ranch - http://www.starranchgolf.com Located near Hutto, Texas, a suburb of Austin/Round Rock, this course opened in 2001, and was designed by Roy Bechtol. Star Ranch is a public course, but does offer annual memberships. Limited full memberships go quickly (in December for the following year) (spring/09) at $2895 single and $3295 family. Weekday & Sunday memberships are $1695 single and $2095 family, plus cart fee. Weekday preferred (with cart) are $1395 single. Homes in the area range (spring/09) from around $150,000 to the mid $300s, altogether making this course/area an affordable executive golf neighborhood. Blackhawk Golf Club -http://blackhawkgolf.com  Blackhawk is a links-style course, located in Pflugerville, ajoining Austin to the northeast, and plays over 7000 yards from the championship tees. Although public, Blackhawk offers two memberships. A limited, weekday mornings and weekend afternoons, and a full membership. Prices have not been made available. Shadow Glen Golf Club - http://www.shadowglengolf.com Shadow Glen is located in Manor, Texas, just 10 miles east of Austin, and might be the most challenging public course in the Austin area. Opened in 2002, this Roy Bechtol course will probably give you all you can handle - and at a very affordable price. Annual memberships are available (spring/09) single $1799 and weekday single $1299 both including cart. A plus-cart membership runs $1199 and $749 weekday. ColoVista Country Club - ColoVista is located on the Colorado River, about thirty minutes east of Austin. The course offers views of the river as well as a combination of piney hills and bottom land. The course offers two styles in one round, with links-style on the front nine, and a piney hills back nine. Membership  is annualy $3000 for non-residents, and $2500 for club residents. Undeveloped lots are available. Home prices (1/09) range from about $170K to $600K, making this a very affordable area. Pine Forest Golf Club - Pine Forest is located just south of Bastrop, Texas, about 25 miles east of Austin. The course is built along the Colorado River, and is very scenic. Memberships are available for $250 initiation plus $195/mo. The club also offers family, $225/mo, and no-cart single $85, family $110. The course is located in the Tahitian Village community, where homes have been built since the 1970s, and lots are available. Home prices (1/09) range from under $100K to near $300K, making this the most affordable golf community near Austin.

Plum Creek - http://www.plumcreekgolf.com Plum Creek is located in Kyle, Texas - about 15 miles south of Austin. Opened in 1999, the course is a Roy Bechtol design. Plum Creek is a public course, but offers annual memberships (spring/09) for $2979 single, $4600 family, $2600 senior single, and $3600 senior family. Homes in the area range (spring/09) from the low $100s to the mid $200's, making Plum Creek affordable for south Austin residents.
